| The Director of the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership is a full time, 12 month position. Candidates should have a background in the teaching and application of Catholic Social Justice, community-based service learning, and extensive experience in managing volunteers and service programs. Main responsibilities include strategic planning, as well as conceptual and organizational development for the Moreau Center. The Director supervises the Moreau Center staff, student leaders and program coordinators, plans and administers budgets, cultivates and maintains partnerships with local, state and national community service programs and promotes service as a key element of learning. The University of Portland is affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross. | FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, whose mission is, "To create a world where science and technology are celebrate. . . where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes" is a is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that designs accessible, innovative programs [and age-appropriate robotics competitions ] to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math. The four FIRST programs go beyond their robotics-based platforms to provide a continuum where young people ages 6 – 18 are continually engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math. Through regular participation, they build a strong foundation of knowledge and life skills to carry with them into post-secondary education and careers. The outcomes of FIRST are directly linked to the nation's demand for a well-prepared, technologically literate workforce needed to maintain innovation and productivity. AmeriCorps*VISTA Opportunities with FIRST: Students, particularly those in areas of high poverty and minority enrollments, are not taking challenging school courses in math and science, many never complete high school. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a national, non-profit organization that uses age-appropriate robotics activities and competitions to excite students about science, math, technology, and engineering with a long-term goal of encouraging and inspiring them to pursue careers in those fields. In a 2005 report on the effectiveness of FIRST in high school teams from New York City and the Detroit/Pontiac metro areas serving low income, urban, and minority students, Brandeis University reported that FRC (FIRST Robotics Challenge) Alumni were: a) more likely to go on to college than the average student nationally, and b) more likely to pursue careers in science, technology, and engineering. FIRST offers the Robotics Competition and the FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) for high school students, LEGO League for middle school students, and Junior LEGO League for younger students. FIRST uses thousands of professional mentors and other volunteers to help young people to understand what working in scientific careers entails. For each FIRST program, students are required to design and build a robot to compete in a non-aggressive competition that focuses on team collaboration and cooperation. FIRST particularly targets disadvantaged, female, and minority students. VISTA volunteers with FIRST will: 1) assist in recruitment of teams, mentors, and volunteers, with emphasis on low-income and minority students and volunteers, 2) raise funds for teams, especially those in low-income areas, and for regional competitions, 3) assist in organizing regional competitions for all FIRST programs, 4) support, recruit, and train FIRST volunteers, and 5) secure on-going participation of teams, particularly those who face disadvantaged circumstances. Member Duties: Activities include development of a list of possible sponsors and other funding sources and a plan for meeting with potential sponsors; presentation and promotion of FIRST to potential sponsors; communication with teams to determine needs; regular meetings with the Regional Director (RD) and assistance for planning activities (does not include regular administrative support, but may require some administrative work); presentation and promotion of FIRST to community groups, such as: Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary Clubs, youth groups, PTAs, and economic and workforce development boards; in collaboration with the RD, promotion of FIRST to legislative, academic, and public groups, community-based organizations, legislative education committees, & governor's offices; recruitment of professional mentors and students to teams through various media such as corporate intranets, school papers and publications, posters, newspapers, and TV/radio interviews. The AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will increase the understanding of higher educational institutions in Maryland with regard to the multiple benefits of membership in the Maryland Higher Education-AmeriCorps*VISTA Project (MHE-AVP) especially addressing poverty issues in their local communities. The role is divided into two areas: 1) supervision of eight VISTA members and their host-campuses in program development 2) supporting the development of the Maryland Campus Compact Initiative (MDCCI). Unlike the typical VISTA Leader position, this position is highly administrative in developing a statewide organization. The VISTA Leader will not work directly with college students or community youth. This AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader will work directly with the eight VISTAs placed at higher educational institutions across Maryland. The nature of the recruitment process includes, but is not limited to: conducting research, telephone interviews and presenting about the opportunity of hosting an AmeriCorps*VISTA member to potential host institutions. University students in the Interdisciplinary Education & Action, or "IdEA", Program and other university courses seek opportunities to address community needs through service-learning. The VISTA members will develop campus-community partnerships and service-learning initiatives with IdEA and other programs through the Center for Academic Engagement (www.usd.edu/engage). PROGRAM OVERVIEW: RICC AmeriCorps*VISTAs will help institutions align resources in order to better respond to pressing issues facing low-income communities. In their capacity as Resource and Service Coordinators, VISTAs will improve the quality of service and service-learning programs and increase the number of students serving local communities. In 2007-2008, RICC expanded its program to include public school based VISTA members.
